The Kendall Ancestors

The Kendall Line has been researched back to William Kendall who was born about 1550. His GGGGranddaughter, Mary's baptism was recorded 18 Jan 1685 in Hatfield, Yorkshire. There is no record of her ever being married. When she died in August 1731, she was buried as a Kendall. So the Kendall name carried on.

Her son John was born out of wedlock on Oct. 6, 1706 in Arksey, Yorkshire.

John’s son William settled in the parish of Auckley/Finningley where he and his wife Sarah raised their family. Early census records indicate that they were wheelwrights/labourers, probably working in the mines of the parish which straddles the border between Yorkshire and Nottingham.

It was John’s grandson George Kendall (1775) that moved away from the family to Thorne, Yorkshire, possibly due to a job at a peat mine in the area. He continued to be listed as a wheelwright, later changed to cooper. Local historians indicate that this would have been a natural progression once he left the employ of the mine. He married Elizabeth BARRETT Sep 16, 1811 in Thorne, Yorkshire.

Together they had 8 children. The two youngest, Ann (c. Sep 20, 1812) and Sarah (c. Dec 17, 1814) were married in Thorne. Ann to George WILKINSON DEC 3 1833 and Sarah to William STONES Jan 19 1836. We assume that two other daughters, both named Elizabeth died young although we have no record of that.

The four remaining, George (Jul 17 1821), Enoch (May 23 1823), Elijah (Dec 12 1828) and Elizabeth ( Apr 10 1832) emigrated to Canada with their parents sometime between 1836 and 1845 where they settled in Ontario.

The story of George’s life and death in Ontario is told here.
